The coolest places to eat, drink and shop on Karangahape Road

Karangahape Road is one of the most iconic destinations in Auckland.

At various points in the past century, it has been one of the main shopping streets in the city, a thriving heart for the Pacific community, a hub for queer nightlife, and a red light district.

Karangahape Road — sometimes called K Road, although locals are reverting back to the full name — has worn many different identities in the recent past, but one thing has remained unchanged.

This strip of asphalt is a meeting point for creatives and non-conformists, home for the outcasts artists, a bastion of individuality in a city that so often feels homogenous.

Karangahape Road is one of my favourite places in the city at any time of day. Early in the morning, you can get coffee from Bestie and pastries from Fort Greene. In the afternoon, you can rummage through the vintage and second hand stores. And come evening, settle into one of the excellent restaurants, before transitioning to a bar or nightclub well after dark.

If you’re looking for the best places to eat, shop, and drink along Karangahape Road, here’s my local guide to this iconic street.
